On Wednesday, December 18, 2024, the Upshur County Central Office Administration, led by Superintendent Miller, met with the Principals of Upshur County. During this meeting, Superintendent Miller discussed leadership lessons, the importance the implementation of PAX with 100% constancy, and financial concerns. Mr. Gray, Director of Curriculum, discussed the upcoming social studies curriculum adoption and the upcoming iReady benchmark starting on January 8th. Mrs. Johnson, Director of Federal Programs, reviewed recent updates from the WV Department of Education. She emphasized the importance of documenting progress on school strategic plans, provided updates on RCD, and discussed changes to this year’s general summative assessment. Mr. Sisk, Director of Safety & Technology, discussed the need for increased communication from the schools, the completion of the spring West Virginia School Learning Environment Survey, and a vaping update. Mrs. Osburn, Director of Special Education, discussed at length upcoming training that special education personnel will need to be part of to ensure compliance with her expectations. Mr. McDaniels, Director of Nutrition, gave an update on nurses' schedules, the major reduction of kitchen violations noted by the health inspector, and a reminder that all food invoices must be turned into the central office in a timely manner. Mr. Derico, Director of Facilities, stressed the importance of continual care of the building especially during winter. He addressed the reduction of melting salt entering the building, conducted exit light inspections, and emphasized the necessity of a mid-year deep clean. Mrs. Baisden, Director of Student Services, stressed the importance of regular child and teacher attendance in the schools. Additionally, Mrs. Baisden discussed the upcoming Civil Rights Survey that must be completed and the work that the principals will need do to assist with an accurate survey.

Know the Language - RCD
Upshur County Schools continues to work on Rigorous Curriculum and Design (RCD) through our teachers. The purpose of RCD is to have the teachers at Upshur County Schools by grade level set the curriculum pacing to ensure that all standards are effectively taught.
Finance Training - Winter Conference 💵❄️
This past Wednesday, members of the Upshur County Finance Team attended the Winter WVEIS Finance Conference. The conference highlighted the upcoming budgeting expectations for the 2025-2026 fiscal year. Additionally, discussions began on replacing outdated finance software, which the WVDE requires LEAs to use. The most exciting aspect of this conference and its training sessions was their forward-thinking approach. This innovative outlook perfectly aligns with Upshur County Schools’ commitment to pursuing excellence.
📚 Dolly Parton's Imagination Library
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is offered in Upshur County at no cost to families with children ages birth to age 5. There are currently 793 active children and 1,879 who have graduated from the program. In November, book activity sheets developed by literacy specialists were emailed to families. These family activity sheets are designed to promote learning and foster engagement with children and their caregivers. ALEKS
ALEKS is a learning tool used in Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, AP and Applied Statistics, and Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus classes at BUHS to assess progress. The goal for students is to fill in their pie chart by the end of the year. Pictured above is the average that students have completed at BUHS so far. All students in Upshur County Schools grades K-8 complete lessons in Reading/Language Arts and Mathematics on the iReady platform.
The goal for students in Upshur County Schools is to pass lessons with at least a 70% and to work on the platform for 30-50 minutes weekly in both Reading/Language Arts and Mathematics.
Correlation between iReady and the WV General Summative is significant. Simply put, the better our students do at iReady the better our WV General Summative Assessments should be.
